If you do not know the name of the key of a piece of music, the key signature can help you find out. Assume for a moment that you are in a major key.

The distance of a semitone or half step is from one note on the piano to the next. That could be from a white note to the next black or a black note to the next white note. There are two places on the piano keyboard where there are natural semitones, from E to F and from B to C.
The distance of a tone or whole step is two semitones, a white note to the next white note or a black note to the next black note, unless starting on E or B but you can still count two semitones. Examples: E to F# or B to C# |
